ABOUT THE WORK

When I look at magazines or go through social media, I rarely ever see Black people professionally photographed in color, and if I do, the colors I usually see that are used are either red, blue, or yellow. Other colors are barely used on Black skin, and it can get even more scarce on darker skinned Black people. It’s only in shows like Insecure and movies like Moonlight where we start to see some deferentiality in how Black people are lit. So I kept wondering why I didn’t see much variety, and I eventually decided to try my hand at expanding the variety myself. I made the decision to bring to life the representation that I wanted to see. I hope to spark the idea that there are more than a few ways to show and represent Black people. I know there are people out there who understand that, but I want to inspire people to put in the work to expand our representation.
